Okay, so after the episode Hammer of the Gods, we decided that Gabriel was really one of Team Free Will. He chose to help Dean and Sam, sacrificing himself in the process.
As DabrielLuver correctly pointed out, and I quote: "Come on he gave his life so the boys could get away with Kali. That is TFW material."
We completely agreed with her. Gabriel totally 'stepped up to the plate' when it really counted and was unbelievably heroic. He chose humans over the angels, which was completely out of character for him. So we think he really does deserve to be a member of Team Free Will.

On a side note: He will be totally missed by us and we think he deserves to be resurrected!
Supernatural writing team, we're not adverse to begging!! Please can we have him back? He was a fantastic character and we miss him already.
We will be keeping our fingers crossed. After all Eric Kripke did say to Samantha Ferris (Ellen Harvelle): "on this show, nobody really dies."
